Belated 'before and after' scan photos

Several people have been asking for an update on how Naomi's doing medically, so now that I have the time and the pictures here's a bit of a before and after.

The neurosurgeon and paediatrician were very pleased with her behaviour and her brain development, both are as would be expected for her age. The paediatrician still takes quite a 'wait and see' attitude to future development such as speech etc. He'll see us again in August. The neurosurgeon thinks development will be as it would have been without hydrocephalus. We'll see him again in a year. It was good to see other children in the waiting room who've had shunts and are there for an annual visit, having had no reason to see a doctor in between.

The Neurosurgeon was disappointed that we'd not brought Dad, since he was looking forward to showing him the recent scan. He printed the before and after pictures for him. Here is the one from the day Naomi was born:

The dark areas show where the liquid was. The area marked with a little red 'A' is the cyst which probably caused the hydrocephalus and the area marked B is the hydrocephalus
Then below is the scan from January:
The area marked A shows the amazing development of Naomi's brain where the cyst had been.
The ventricles at B are now more in proportion to Naomi's head size and should continue to reduce proportionately.

These are the Xrays showing the shunt and the tube
What the surgeons can do and where they can go is amazing. The intricate and complex development of Naomi's brain where it had been previously blocked is a reminder of how "fearfully and wonderfully made" we are.

PS for those who can manage an extra detail: Just to the left of where I wrote C on the second photo you can actually see that there is a flow (darker) still draining down through the hole made in the first operation, so it had worked partially, just not completely.

Great to hear updates about your new location too! Loads of love xx
